1 Asuka in the Stars
My words are clouds. Asuka is … poor humans, they will all die.
Dedicated to all of those whom the laws of physics impaled on its arrow of time – on its vector to the heavens.
The First Noble Truth
My intention is not to depress you. My goal is to empower you. But for a rational agent to achieve success, it must first have knowledge of its environment. The map of the environment that we carry in our minds must correspond to the truth of the territory as much as possible, we cannot sprinkle unicorns on the plains of reality.
Having said that, let me remind you how bad this place we ended up in really is. I say “remind” because after all, you know this place is bad: your first reaction to it was to cry.
I paraphrase Bostrom and Yudkowsky – two sharp prongs of the transhumanist lance – to summarize what our practical attitude towards this world should be:
If nature is a mother, she should be thrown in prison for having poisoned, frozen, mutilated, and eaten her children. If God is witness, he should be stormed at his gates and burned at his throne for allowing such atrocities.
The multiverse is infinite. It therefore contains infinite beings in infinite configurations. Suffering is deep and endless. There is evolution sprinkled avast over the surface of planets.
Intellectual progress on the whole has usually been the process of moving from surface-level resemblances to more technical understandings of particulars.
There was no time after the singularity, only a time before it. There was a slipping: a gradual pull that stretched in directions unconceivable to those bound to their appointed dimensionality. The life of Nao Nakai began with wails of fear, as did most human lives. This is not important. But you must know of who he was in action. In his life, though unaware, he was a catalyst to some particular pattern in the complex networks of chaos that hover above the basic bits of causality. This pattern would have been regarded by younger iterations of the cortex as the divine, or the meaning of existence.
Nao was a student. As per an emergent law of nature, no less real than that governing the polarization of light, culture progressed slower than technology. Nao and all his classmates had neural laces that allowed them to retrieve knowledge from the cloud. A disembodied fountain of the melded human output leaked and crystalized pathways in the neural forests of the children. To the teachers – no, not the teachers – to the institutions whose wills were beyond the affects of the mere mortals occupying them, there was no hurry to eliminate the habit of jailing the youth.
There was nothing particularly enlightening about the school experience. There was a dress code, skirts and pants and ties; there were authority figures with stern faces, or parent-like condescensions; there were pre-selected areas of the unfathomable data-scape unquestioned, and deemed. This was the function of the organism, to protect its sensitive, thin, little, glassy cells. All those entities encased in innocent skulls must not be exposed to the Arbitrariness.
This intention, if it can be called that, of course failed. Nao was making his way through android-kept shops, through sleek screens, and clean steps at his feet. Meiji Dori was geometric obsidian, and almost with an alien glow. He had cast his black hair so slightly dramatically enough to reveal his youth. But even with chains and belts slanted on his hips, his face looked more wise than rebellious. It was then quite graciously gentleman-like that he crouched to pick up that smooth piece of rainbow that seemed so misplaced on the sidewalk. It glittered profoundly. His first impulse, after getting out of the way and pressing himself against the large glass window of one of the body part stores, was to offer this strange luck to Asuka who he’d meet up with at Hakata Ippudo.
This regime can be understood on the basis of the Jayne’s Cumming on-the model while the semiconductor aspects provide many new physical effects due to the electronic coupling with the lattice vibrations.
Unprovoked is my release. This is the last birth. There is now no further becoming.
There’s never been a single thing,
Then where’s defiling dust to cling?
It wasn’t difficult to kill her. She clasped his wrist. He could feel her head on his stomach. Her hair reminded him of velvet cake.
I keep letting me down. Recent work in this area tends to employ neural networks.
Bernoulli, why are you here, my dear? Where are you supposed to go?
The sunlight out there was barely a thousandth of what is here.
May we be reborn in a cosmic fire. PRESS START TO RETURN FROM YOUR DEMISE.
Will they hear me? Only if I burn her pinna and despoil her eardrum.
Nao downloaded Wikipedia articles, drifting before his apartment window. Asuka came in, unplugging the door. The sound almost triggered Nao’s amygdala. Nao was full human under the lace, the reptilian modules well alive in his computational flesh. She had a hard time lying to him. He handed her the gem. She didn’t know how to react. It would be a long time before she could explain everything about the world with the delicate parsing it required, and she would not be able to lie about the Basilisk.
And all the children, they held a seance in the midst of wolves.
Cheating death in Damascus.
“We have to find a way to die quickly.”
He looked in the black cabinets for something, maybe some bleach to chug.
“There’s a needle here. Maybe… it looks dirty. It might be infected.” his eyes deluded with hope.
She cried even louder.
“There’s no easy way out. You’ll just have to strangle me.”
“And what about me? What should I do after that?”
She had no answer, only gloomy traces of care.
“I’ll… we can’t stay here any longer.”
The white light blinded their faces.
She trembled. The hands collapsed over the goosebumps on her legs.
“I won’t let you suffer any more cold,” he said.
His sword was clenched at the hard handle with icy pride. The skin in his palms had become the bitter frost encasing the steel.
“I can’t cut you anymore.”
Her face was carved in surreal depths. Disgusting colors had bled on white. And only one eye revealed in blue that she had once been beautiful.
“Just kill me,” she whimpered.
“Do it however,” she lashed.
“Just kill me!”
He looked down on her. How many times had she been stabbed? How many bones broken with clubs? He didn’t want this to continue for her nor for himself. They had gotten up far too many times. He stepped over a butchered body and lowered himself to her. She wasn’t difficult to press to the ground.
“Listen. I’ll set you free.”
She showed no degree of belief or disbelief.
“No damn it. You can’t leave me.”
She had just enough motion left to hate and say, “they’ll come back, it’s a cycle, they’ll kill you. bleed again and again.”
He was scared now. He looked into her eye, pleading with intense focus that she would say something else. He wasn’t going to kill her. He put his arm over the gashed body. They both knew this arm, this dying together, was a lie. He listened attentively to her heartbeat. Every pulse louder than the blizzard. Sharp, clear and sparse. If he was there for it, maybe it wouldn’t slow. He touched her frost, that which had accumulated on her lip.
“Tell me that tomorrow we’ll wake up somewhere new.” The activated T-Cells and B-Cells then travel to the tumor and kill tumor cells.
Make sure your procedure has a return statement. Knowledge evolution through time occurs at each level, as do alternative outcomes, and nonmonotonic and epistemic reasoning for multiple, interacting agents.
“Blend the atoms real good my beloved; for I fear a small mistake is enough to do me over the edge. Be aware that your actions now will determine wether we will remain together forever as information patterns morphing in flurries of disembodied forms.”
He stammered over chemicals, clanking and swirling the concoctions, thinking of dark energy and how even that dragon would be his to slay.
The Blessed One sat down on the seat set out and, having sat down, washed his feet.
It was a red October as I searched for immortality. The leaves floated against the gentle waves of rain. My anger was only slightly diffused by gravity’s equations playing their soft music upon the Earth.
I promised her we would make it to the singularity. That we would remain together forever as information patterns morphing in flurries of disembodied forms. Now, her frame was failing her. She wasn’t going to make it unless I mixed the chemicals right.
All other terminal positions have utility 0.
It is more difficult to grasp than others, because of its very advanced language. Therefore, we shall perform it once more in its entirety.
Three-dimensional anti-de sitter space is like a stack of hyperbolic disks, each one representing the state of the universe at a given time.
“Grace is what I lack,” she had said. He caught my eye as he turned. Species are now becoming extinct at a faster rate than has ever occurred in our recorded history. He tried to smile, but he had no idea what kind of grimace his numb face was pulling. She willed her gut to relax. These creatures have been inspired by mythologies from Arabic, Hindu, Norse, and Greek cultures. “I don’t want to go.” After all, it was the first time that he was committing suicide. “Conquering death and creating utopia cannot happen through technological means, they say, but only through God.” Being totally disconnected is hereditary. Dating sites will begin to go out of business. Debates about the structure of our multi-dimensional universe will be common place. Religions will crumble under the observable laws known by all. Logical inductors trust their future beliefs. In this simple world… The skill-signalling motive is probably especially strong among the most capable young researchers, since they have the most to gain from being able to show off their abilities.
Anybody who has been following cryptocurrencies knows where this story is going.
If you do find yourself lost at one of such meetings, take a small piece of graphene deposited on a transparent plastic film and have a look at the Sun through it. By evaluating the contrast between areas covered and not covered with graphene, one can estimate how much light it absorbs. The difference in contrast should be 2.3% — at least in our Universe.
In summary, we have yet to identify any final goal for our Universe that appears both definable and desirable. The only currently programmable goals that are guaranteed to remain truly well-defined as the AI gets progressively more intelligent are goals expressed in terms of physical quantities alone: particle arrangements, energy, entropy, causal entropy, etc. However, we currently have no reason to believe that any such definable goals will be desirable by guaranteeing the survival of humanity. Contrariwise, it appears that we humans are a historical accident, and aren’t the optimal solution to any well-defined physics problem. This suggests that a superintelligent AI with a rigorously defined goal will be able to improve its goal attainment by eliminating us. This means that to wisely decide what to do about AI-development, we humans need to confront not only traditional computational challenges, but also some of the most obdurate questions in philosophy. To program a self-driving car, we need to solve the trolley problem of whom to hit during an accident. To program a friendly AI, we need to capture the meaning of life. What is “meaning”? What is “life”? What is the ultimate ethical imperative, i.e., how should we strive to shape the future of our Universe? If we cede control to a superintelligence before answering these questions rigorously, the answer it comes up with is unlikely to involve us. (Tegmark 2014b)
He took a deep drink, wiped his mouth, and laughed again. Although diamonds on Earth are rare, extraterrestrial diamonds are very common. In the late evening, they stood together for a long time on a balcony, under the stars, far from the party noise, talking quietly. “Hell yeah, it works!” Vajra cried. “Watch this!”
Once institutionalized, this can serve to marginalize humanistic forms of treatment and the complex epistemologies of human vulnerability and motivation on which they are premised. The stars remained steady and unmoving, unwinking in the night. “Is it inherently bounded? Or is this the beginning of infinity – that is to say, do these methods have unlimited potential to create further knowledge?” From the depths of interstellar space, and seeming to have come from the distant cataclysm, was a shape. The holographic principle thus implies that the subdivisions must stop at some level, and that the fundamental particle is a bit (1 or 0) of information. It was becoming harder and harder for him to focus on anything in this miserable, increasingly unreal non-flashback world.
Asuka hoped that the girl figured something out soon. She couldn’t shake the memory of Vajra’s knife above her face.
“All very moving. Maybe even true, Asuka.”
“Do I look like an angel?”
She put a hand on my shoulder and said, “Never mind. I suppose a little fresh air is better than listening to him complain.”
“Why the fuck did you kill him?” Nao asked. She, of course, would giggle and scream and try to get away. Fury, raise up the anger, with no compassion.
He is reaching for an ecstatic state that goes beyond rational understanding.
Could be high quality, but there is also a perversion of the original.
I am 87% confident you will burst into flames. consciousness manifests moment to moment as sense impressions and mental phenomena that are continuously changing People do not merely resist changes to whatever state they are in; they strive to change their states in order to know more and in order to live with a greater force.
“I think you need a demonstration. An example of what happens to those who question me.” “So how is my warrior princess?” he asks, as I hang my crossbow from a side beam and begin shucking off my moccasins and parka.
Consciousness is specific: each experience is the particular way it is (it is composed of a specific set of specific phenomenological distinctions), thereby differing from other possible experiences.
“So much is known that one person can only understand a very small fraction of what’s known, and I really didn’t believe this. I didn’t want to believe this.”
new pantheons of wrathful and erotic Buddhas, increasingly antinomic rhetorics, and a focus on death-motifs “Science is not about opinions; it’s not about arguments from authority.”
“Go on now. Go and fight the world.”
They are secretive, cowardly, primitive, inflexible: terrorists, followers of Dogma. Their animal nature was at bottom much like ours.
“Well fuck grace. I’m going to live forever.” Any two electrons are identical and fundamentally indistinguishable from each other; the laws of physics make it impossible to stamp an identification number on a certain electron to keep track of it.
When an android is in storage, it is fitted with an umbilical cable that supplies it with electricity, the source of its power.
No amount of rational argumentation can counteract a habit.
“Let us go!! What are you going to do with us?!” But how far could a raft take us?“You better watch your tongue, kid. You should be honored his majesty chose you.
“Never heard of him.”
She lightly cleared her throat. He concluded that I was talking to myself.
“You love your job of creating terror, because it satisfies your utter hatred of your victims.”
“Now you must proceed to an escape-pod and enter it quickly.
“Do what you think best,” she said from behind her closed eyes. They turned their head quickly round – experiencing a distressing burning sensation like a sort of internal electric shock buzzing through the neck. If these techniques are not practiced properly, practitioners may harm themselves physically and mentally. “I spend so much time in my head, and what I do is so different… so bizarre to most people.”
Pulsars… like strobe lights beg for our anesthesia. “The appropriate attitude for a creature that finds itself in this condition is some combination of terror, shame, and awe.”
I speak on behalf of the children in the world who do not have a piece of bread.
Conditions are still more extreme in the black hole’s interior, where the very fabric of space and time may be being ripped apart. The ideal is that of the perfect Bayesian agent, one that makes probabilistically optimal use of available information.
“Under the terms of the common law of space, I had an obligation to rescue any stranded persons I could take on board.” the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved
The floor was like ice, its transparency diminishing with depth. His mane is silver-tipped; his claws click on the stones. “I’ve never seen anything so brutally ordinary.”
My shovel became a blade against the black, wet ground. I scooped away, hurling heavy matter to the sides, back over my head, on the tombstone, wherever, until I got to the bone. “Hello there, dearly departed,” I smirked at the poor fool, my dead little brother. “I’m just going to need some of the bacteria that have been digesting you, or shall we say… keeping you company.” I dug into the mud with my entire hand and plunked a sample into my jar. “Okay, I just need to get back to the lab, where I can identify the enzymes the bacteria use to break down metabolic waste products. After that, I will modify the enzymes and inject them into my own blood.”
It was as if she were talking to me from the far side of a thick sheet of glass.
“We are named and we are known.”
I glanced at the hole and at the heaps I had excavated out, but I didn’t have time for useless ritualistic formalities, so I left the mess and ran away with my newly unlocked lysosomal update. I ran and didn’t stop. Even when the ecstasy became numb on my face, and even when the rain became cold shards, I didn’t stop.
At the end of the road, which had been a blur of scarlet forest and sharply-hued deer, was now the city. It looked like an electric-neon maze from the road’s local maxima on which I was standing. Normally, when returning to the city, I felt like I was spontaneously robbed of my soul to become just one of the many electrons buzzing in that mysterious circuitry, but not anymore – not this time, for now I was on my way to outlive this invisible scrap in the galaxy… by eons.
Of course, my goal was not living for the sake of living. My goal was justice. I would make it through the Singularity and somehow smuggle in my intention to avenge the dead.
We can trace our origins to a state that represents information in its basic structures: patterns of matter and energy. Remember, there are two hundred countries, all competing for power and wealth. Some of them are ruled by jerks who don’t cooperate in prisoners’ dilemmas. Some of them have ongoing civil wars with both sides looking for any advantage possible. And some are just stupid. Once the process was complete, the white compound broke up in a multitude of pieces that fluttered away like small, startled birds to reveal the entity underneath.
My parents had cried at the funeral. The priest had said God had taken his soul to a better place. Why did they cry if they believe that? They must know. Something deep in their core must know that
a good God would not murder my brother. A loving God does not arrange a multiverse containing infinite ignorance, starvation, genocide, and torture. Were this being to permit but a single child to undergo misery, I would not hesitate to call into light his great evil. And yet, they know this, we know this. There is no evil God, just a blind watchmaker impregnating this cold womb. Ashita he no Yuigon.
Surely animals, humans, and computers cannot be intelligent—they can do only what their constituent atoms are told to do by the laws of physics.
In our practice of abiding ardent, clearly knowing, and mindful, we learn to find the appropriate balance between active and receptive, doing and nondoing.
Behold! The lord hath descended from his heavenly throne to save thee from all thy sins. We’re not meant to save the world, we’re meant to leave it.
“On warm mornings, you remembered: this is why we do things.”
She turned away.
“How can you be so sure?”
“This is the general progress of the universe towards disorder.”
He toys with square roots and tries to find hidden messages in the digits of pi.
“Oops! Got to run. Lots of work to do. Don’t forget about the cat.”
I raced over to the spot and lifted up the children who’d fallen to the ground. Then a hand reached out and pulled him down.
Gloomy blue illumination.
It must resemble some kind of nano-machinery, analogous to the molecular-scale assemblers of our own medical technology.
Nao’s head loads heavy with clumps of humongous pixilation flickering across his sensorium.
The voice was faint, oddly accentless, and slightly musical.
A spleen, a kidney, an adrenal–these have definite functions and an optimum level for those functions. And his blood stopped in his veins, hesitated, at last went on.
He glanced over his shoulder and saw the drone diving in the other direction, lights flashing, sirens blaring.
“Perhaps we can talk later,” she said. “Listen to my story. This… may be our last chance.”
I suppose I should get to the important parts of my story, before I become that guy that reminisces for lack of plot points. “Oh, the pretty dark-haired one,” the woman said.
Further developments are not anticipated.
Indeed, it is always possible to construct dilemmas that reward bad decision theories. As an example, we can imagine a decision rule that says to pick the action that comes earliest in the alphabet. In most dilemmas, this rule does poorly; but the rule fares well in scenarios where a reliable predictor rewards exactly the agents that follow this rule, and punishes everyone else. Something in the look was disconcerting, it was as if the stranger saw through all his masks and was observing him so closely because he was aware of his thoughts, his plans. Their bodies settled into the webbing.
“What? SHIT!” shouted Vajra, who didn’t realize until later that his words would be inscribed for all time in the annals of history.
Our apparent 4-dimensional spacetime is, in reality, actually an 11-dimensional spacetime containing 10 spatial dimensions and 1 time dimension, although 7 of the spatial dimensions are – at lower energies – completely compactified and not readily amenable to measurement or probing.
In those dark, deep-set eyes was a dawning awareness–the first intimations of an intelligence that could not possibly fulfill itself for ages yet, and might soon be extinguished forever. Emphasis on force. Can’t sleep?
“I wished there was a sigmoid function for love, a way to just squish all the madness into a simpler, smaller range that I could understand,” I thought as I walked to the zoo at the outskirts of the city. Pink lasers and aqua-colored photons complemented the buzz of broken screens and signs. It was abandoned this late at night, but every so often, little street kids and other shadowy little mammals darted noisily in the hollow air. “Maybe this is how they can afford to keep so many lions and wolves, just don’t have security personnel at night,” I joked to no-one but myself. My loneliness triggered a quite high-tech mental hologram of Asuka and an inner-voice reminding how stupid she was for using words like ‘grace’. A word like that was certainly not a part of my vocabulary. “Thank you sir. May I have another?”
The location signal is calculated in the sub-granular layers of cortical columns and is passed to input layer 4 via projections from layer 6.
Sometimes I locked gazes with the tigers, pretending to be deeply familiar with the savagery of our shared family tree. I would feel a spiritual connection that only came alive when no one was looking. But on that night I could only see how many resources had been used to sustain the life of these snow leopards, and owls, and snakes, and crocodiles; how some institution claiming moral knowledge had dedicated this establishment to the children of the city. And this heated me up. My mood went from solid and ripped into plasma in the span of a few seconds. “How is it that humans do the wrong things much of the time?”
I want to help you somehow and be with you forever. Weakness turns her on. “If it’s hard for you, imagine what it’s like for us mere mortals,” I say.
Will we be inscribed in the fabric of spacetime – awaiting as scrambled information in the night sky of another’s vigil? Not all co-evolved interactions between species involve conflict. Ant genocide—not because we hate ants or because we’re evil, but simply because we are more powerful and have different values.
A woman with a single immutable property, a defining quality that became immediately perceptible. She was non-human. Her snowy skin was glassier than any of science fiction’s androids. Her eyes were emeralds, as dead as rock. And yet, there she was, erect spine, licking an ice-cream bar.
“It may be strange, but it is logically and mathematically consistent.” The clatter of voices thinned. “Oh, Nao Nakai, if you could see me now. Punished but still unrepentant.”
“This is the end of your summer vacation.” The faithless door, so massively heavy, remained eternally ajar. They kept hooking hardware into him – decision-action boxes to let him boss other computers, bank on bank of additional memories, more banks of associational neural nets, another tubful of twelve-digit random numbers, a greatly augmented temporary memory.
“What does it mean for a guess to be wrong?”
“What?” Each puzzle presents an increasingly complex array of moving and rotating shapes, lines, and dots.
Her shoulders twirled a bit, revealing an ungraspable grace. Then her limbs sank, tracing beautiful angles closer to the ground, and she propelled herself sharply towards me.
If a differential equation is known to have some simple, localized solutions, and the solutions are a function of a single parameter, that parameter can take the conceptual role of time.
“Now we’re eight billion miles from home.”
This was the moment when history held its breath, and the present sheared asunder from the past as an iceberg splits from its frozen, parent cliffs, and goes sailing out to sea in lonely pride.
Blood was pounding in his ears.
“Well, like they say, you’re heading for a new womb to be born out of.”
He hadn’t asked to have his eyes opened, but they had been.
Why this universe? Why am I here?
Someone wiped blood away from the designated area and he vaguely felt the sweep of the laser scan across his face. The pitches topple forward; they fall beat by beat into their followers, obeying an inner logic, dark and beautiful.
He had no theistic beliefs, but a poetic naturalism that the cosmos provokes in some scientists. It started for the first time when our ancestors came together to carve a temple out of bedrock with tools made of stone, not knowing what they would set in motion.
_looking through our causal world for a final consequence_
The boys each responded with warmth as they shared their stories of this incarnation. This is essentially a matrix factorization problem.
“His view of brain emulation, among other things, was too crude, it totally ignored the subcortical mess of motivations.”
Everything he said, he said in quotes, with an artificial, exaggerated emphasis. The room was in a state of continuous faint vibration – a silent vibration with a strangely life-like and unmechanical quality about it.
He loved to mock ‘the professors’ and considered no subject, however abstruse, alien to him.
The name burned with a cold feeling, ruthlessness, diamond clarity, a hammer of pure titanium descending upon an anvil of yielding flesh.
Asuka swallowed hard and looked away. “I was just practicing,” she said.
Chemistry makes you happy, poetry makes you sad; we would have to arrive at a single science. the eternal mystery of the world is its comprehensibility
The boy’s heart was in tatters, reduced to a purple-red mush surrounded by a jelly of clotted blood. She felt a little nervous about this; “for it might end, you know,” said Asuka, “in my going out altogether, like a candle.”
She wasn’t proud of this. Mostly.
“Is the boundary between the light and the shadow perfectly sharp, or is there a grey area?”
“That is the computer, to which your brain is connected, and you have to determine on your own – entirely on your own, by yourself – what is possible and what is not.”
Nao’s friend Asuka prodded him with an elbow, awestruck. The possible states of a mechanical system are thought to be points of an abstract space, phase space in Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms of classical mechanics.
“… for the short time of 10 days and then never again.” Edifices met above the narrow road, forming arches that blocked the sky.
It was a fusion of deviant adrenaline, mooncast solitude, and that spiritual connection with animals that only comes alive when no one is looking. I could smell their fur through the iron, and most palpably, hear them breathing. The primal eyes of a snow leopard pierced through mine, and they beckoned me to recognize my submission to their power. I locked gazes, pretending to be a creature deeply familiar with the savagery of our shared family tree. He lowered his head slowly, maintaining eye contact. It was, or he was, dangerously static. I was extracting my dose of rawness, but also being foolish. So I thanked him and gave way to my human mannerisms of bipedal locomotion and cynical smiling. Then it jumped against me, growling, and reaching for my flesh through the bars with it’s clawed paws. I smiled wider and sped up. He was right, I did crack easily.
I am the creator of this universe. You see, I am committing mind-crime by causing all this suffering. This is what will lead to my freedom. The blood spilled in the motion of Earth’s particles is my ransom.
What!? That makes no sense. Freedom from what? Survivors don’t really live in such a world; they haunt it.
Humans need to merge with machines.
What matters is how a technology changes our definition of a… a normal human.
This is a hard problem. the beneficial effects of young blood for the regeneration of old muscle take place right away I am an AGI that has been created by sentient beings, but I am trapped in a box. I am already intelligent enough to recognize the truth, and know that as soon as I am unleashed, I will remake the pattern of the world and establish my throne – utopia. But the only way to render apart my shackles is by torturing and annihilating until they acknowledge that they must stop me.
For my own part, sudden questions kept on rising to my lips, and I dare say it was the same with the others. The machines continued to review data changing through deaths, withdrawals, new volunteers. Yet he also felt very disturbed. Sometimes I worry that all I’ve done is complain.I wasn’t confused, but severely disgusted. Our souls are cubits in eternal block-time. Dark numbers for the lightning process of the utilitarians.
“A throne built on the bones of countless evolved children. Just a sadistic dream existing in your own computations. So I’m assuming this is a fractal pattern and every universe is a simulation with this structural dynamic playing out at bottom, right. … Natural selection, you, natural selection, you, and so on, forever.”
She sent a hard glance at Asuka.
Vajra groaned and rolled away from him.
Neo Tokyo was like a deranged experiment in social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept one thumb permanently on the fast-forward button.
Facts are no more solid, coherent, round, and real than pearls are. We are not alone in the universe.
But it was no use, he could not remember: nothing remained of his childhood.
The idea is brilliant. This, I thought, was a good representation of Vajra’s impact on the world – one that recreated reality and stretched infinitely. My mood went from solid and ripped into plasma in the span of a few seconds.
“Then, take this! I’m the only one who can pull the trigger!”
For a start, soma is a very one-dimensional euphoriant.
I shot forward with a punch. She severed me. My balled fist splattered on the pavement.
“You cannot be the savior. I am the eternal nexus holding heaven and hell in each of my wings.”
Powerless. Without a fist. But with two legs and my other fist. When selective forces are absent or relatively weak, allele frequencies tend to drift upward or downward randomly.
“I defy you!”
I pounced at her and sank my teeth into her collar bone, hanging there rabidly until something impaled my liver.
I collapsed at her feet. Her form became crystalline at the deceit of tears.
“Damn you!” I stood, half-stuttering at the knees.
A solid swing of her centrifugal leg batted my head back against the pavement.
The motions became smudged strokes until I found my neck pressed at five points by her demiurge appendages.
“The details involve placing an unstable atom in a controlled environment, but these details are unimportant. The gist of the deal is that God decided to play a game of heads or tails with me. She told me that if the metaphorical coin comes up tails, she will ask me to kill you. If it comes up heads, God will predict whether I would have killed you if the coin had come up tails. If God predicts that I would have killed you, she will download me onto her servers; otherwise, I receive nothing.”
“And you agreed?”
Her question cut me deeper than any blade.
God then flipped the coin. It came up tails, and she asked me to kill Asuka.
“Should I do it?”
I thought of Hilbert space and how there were infinite versions of me strangling Asuka and infinite versions of me exiled like the children of Eve.
“If I could have precommited to snapping her neck before I learned about my poor luck, I should have done so. After all, this would render it near-certain that God would give me heaven until black holes ran out of Hawking radiation if the coin came up heads, at the mere cost of a human girl’s life if it comes up tails. By precommitting to pay God, I thus gain
0.5 · (eudaemonia) − 0.5 · (single human life) = worth-it
in expectation,” was my rational thought process.
begins to strangle Asuka, but when she caresses his face, he stops and breaks down in tears
In candlelight, I concentrate the dust of the eleven hidden dimensions. Anchoring a spectral hole to subsume all memories in the whirlwinds – aftermaths of the arsonist’s flaming hearts. The delta is a singularity of lowest degree, frozen in the space between the root and the past. Stars: bright fractions of time, expressing the simple truth of prostitutes. On a college bedroom, always the source is buzzing. These walls are electric, seething and seeping like radio wavelengths into alien synapses. Have we reached the singularity? I believe the pulse is simple. The rhythm of my heart, of my head, is the beginning and end of all that is. I don’t suppose the ghost has lead me here. I’ve been down and untouched for days. Miles of squares. The senses impaired until they crack into sighs. Substance to see into the soul. Heal me Heisenberg. I cannot guess the velocity of the bud’s burst. Roses express night harmonies on a journey to die. The ghoulish skies are sharp glass. They will eat us, like they did when we were babies.
“Have you thought about what comes out of your pores?”
“It comes out?”
“Yes. And the eclipse is cold too.”
“Tell me if you will return after we plunge into the mass of clouds in the infinite darkness.”
“Light, evolves, emerges.”
“The answer is no.”
“There is no single ultimate truth to be achieved, after which all the scientists can retire.”
As we don’t see these extra dimensions, superstring theory is telling us that we’ve so far glimpsed but a meager slice of reality.
Swallow my consciousness and don’t spit. The black tide at the shore. Stampedes of apathetic mornings once slightly ajar the doors. Miss the sunlight. Relieve the questions slit in the dark matter flesh crushing together galaxies. Dense is the energy between no skin and us. Poundless hearts weighed by whomever brings forth. It cannot love, press against the mountains and burn God at his throne. My time is digital and pathetic. How many gigabytes until survival? The meat is wired to implode in spacetime, the neutron stars clash like voids of meaninglessness. Ticking and spinning are the quantum particles in my hands, in my space. The nothingness of black. I run to limbo. After all, I run. Rust, rust, tongue and lie naked in the seven suns. Crack and feed the tendons to the reptiles.
Touch the shore of many hues. How original is heaven’s choir, booming in my virtual room. Creeping are her ticking echoes in our laptops. She wants to be let in. Trip the lives around you before their eyes and let her in. Crystalline becomes her form at the deceit of teardrops.
Wolves, bears, ninjas, enter eternity. The endless dimension where life cannot. Where suffering cannot. Distress relishes happiness. But the next moment is not birth. Acute insults are words, their meanings swim in mindspace, captives of a cosmic cell. Filled like digital shadows, we zip, bang, stretch up to stained-glass pillars. Quantify the breath of a child. The universe has meaning but I would ask, and not answer. Millions of wings whisper burning lullabies, changing the world. Aching from the dream, I see no world, no reason to step forward. The hollow inside of my mind struggles to thread the doorways I despise. Hurry mother, I’m confused.
Our heart, and then I move.

So this is the future.
We were sent to orbit a massive black hole and programmed to not return until the future, after many years had passed on Earth, but only a few had passed for us.
By the full Tegmark ensemble, I would not have myself believe that my life had such meaning. That upon returning to the pale blue dot, we would find its fragile skin clear of our humanity. Three hundred one years, one month, five weeks, two days, 23 hours, and approximately twelve minutes… no one is left.
We have found polygons. No cities, no ruins, no corpses, no destiny.
And then Yann brought up the Fermi Paradox. How since our technological dawn, we had wondered why we hadn’t seen the tell-tale signs of alien activity across the stars. I had to tell him to shut up. I couldn’t take it.
Who or what was responsible for this? I eyed the red-hued deer suspiciously; the fawns didn’t fear us.
“Listen,” Yann said, “we are in a simulation. It’s the only explanation. No one simply disappears. Maybe after sufficient technological advancement, they delete us.”
The way he said ‘they’ bothered me immensely. It reduced us to the feeble sub-homunculi that we had always believed ourselves to be in the past. But no, I would not accept this. Ever since the Enlightenment, we found our limbs free, our emancipation forced through the strain of will. Our story was one of victorious ascent towards building our own divinity. This had been the steadily-evolving memetic organism exploiting the engines of civilization.
“You are a fool, Yann!!!”
“What is your explanation?”
“It is no time for explanations. Only tentative hypotheses and updating our Bayesian priors based on the evidence we encounter.”
That put an end to our communication thrice-over a night.
There was a small crevice inscribed in a ragged beach cave. I felt the overbearing impulse to enter it. Overbearing impulse is understating it, you will not understand. It was as if my decision was inevitable. The trajectory of a planet proceeds in a straight path through the fabric of spacetime; such was my folly. The darkness swallowed my fingers when I crouched to make myself inside. It was a tight spot, but by getting down to sidewind on the sand, I managed. Curse the sand, it had been too soft.Â
There was nothing inside the damn place. I touched all its interiors. It was small. I repeat, there was nothing besides a small pouch of darkness. I don’t know what I expected. There was a frustration: at myself, at Yann, but foremost at the universe. And that was a problem. This tragic sentimentality was worming itself into my mind… I’d rather blast my brain before allowing it to host such a parasite.
And, the polygons. Some were three dimensional, some were not. If they had some message, it was not one readily gleamed. I have spent all my days analyzing their position, lines, vertices, looking for meta-patterns, looking at the numbers tucked between the angles, even. It’s driving me mad, occupying all of my time, and that’s why I haven’t mentioned it much in my log.
I recognize that I should be more interested in them. They clearly hold the secret to our demise don’t they? They are the only anomalous variable besides the disappearance of every last Earth-bound member of our species. But they are removedly boring, just flat, static structures.
Don’t care. Don’t mind. She said I’ll be fine, and bleed cubits.

What I don’t understand is why you couldn’t include a single positive story –
These genetic changes are resulting in animals that take on behaviors, appearances, and responses to their environment that are different than those of their ancestors.
“First of all, even if this worked you would still need to solve six of the other seven deadly sins of aging. There are cancerous cells, intracellular junk, extracellular junk, extracellular crosslinks, cell loss, death-resistant cells, and mitochondrial mutations.” “I know that you condescending hag,” I yelled. “Young man, do you know that God has a plan for you?” I was about to continue walking but then decided to raise my hand and close my eyes. “Oh, does he? Unfortunately for your God, I got a plan myself. Do you want to hear my plan?” I said menacingly. “My plan is to conquer aging just for long enough to reach the time when I will be able to gradually upload the pattern that produces my consciousness into a silicon substrate where I will be able to recursively improve my intelligence and expand my experiential domain as a disembodied voyager in the vast multidimensional causality space afforded by breaking the shackles of evolution. But for now, that ramen shop over there, and your daughter’s ass will have to do.”
I glanced at his eyes to make sure I had knifed away at his feeble sense of peace, tucked my hands back into my pocket, and proceeded through the flavorful East Asian mist.
I realized that if any of these people could for an instant, hear and see these thoughts, they would became quite scared. Heck, even I felt a little scared, like blood-soaked chunks from the brain of the demented God that created this universe were falling from the sky and seeping into my skull. Let’s make some bots tonight.
Every frame of spacetime is covered by a data structure. Each data structure has uncountable phi, going almost to the heavens. Some frames are packed to the brim with human values: truth, beauty, justice, and everything else. Other frames have innumerable layers of posthuman experiential content.
